Dear Colleagues and Friends,

With this email, I would like to thank you, on behalf of the German Institute of Human Rights, the UN Special Rapporteur on the rights of persons with disabilities Mr Gerard Quinn and the UN Independent Expert on the enjoyment of all human rights by older persons Ms Claudia Mahler, for your participation in the Workshop, War – the Raw Edge of Intersectionality, Protecting and Accommodating Persons with Disabilities and Older Persons and affected by War in Ukraine the 2ndand 3rd of May in Berlin.

Your contribution has enabled us to explore protection, accountability mechanisms and the kinds of proof needed in context of war in Ukraine and in armed conflict in the world. Your inputs have shed light on the rights and needs of groups who find themselves in vulnerable situations in the war zones and after fleeing in and out of the country such as persons with disabilities (including children, adults and older persons with disabilities) and older persons. For the future, we hope that through your respective roles and by using your expertise and decision-making capacity, you will impact on policy responses to support people with disabilities and older persons, ensuring equal protection for all people in these vulnerable situations. We hope that this debate has also been useful for you to better understand the protection and reception rights and needs of these two groups.

We would like to continue our cooperation with all of you in the coming weeks and months in order to initiate concrete actions that will ultimately bring a tangible positive change in the reality of these groups that decide to stay in Ukraine and to those who decide to flee the country. Please do not hesitate to inform us of your actions in this regard and to share with us any other thoughts or suggestions.
