The EU should urgently support organizations of people with disabilities affected by the US aid cuts

February 10, 2025

The European Disability Forum (EDF), together with the European Association of Disability Service Providers and a number of affected organizations calls for European Union and international donors to provide emergency funding. This call comes in the wake of the serious consequences of the cuts in U.S. humanitarian aid, which are affecting the work of organizations of people with disabilities in countries in conflict or recovery, including Ukraine.

Joint statement on the EDF website

The EDF website has published joint statementemphasizing the need for an immediate response to the funding crisis. The document, signed by several organizations, emphasizes the critical state of many humanitarian support, rehabilitation and social protection programs that could be terminated due to the sudden loss of financial assistance.

Why is it important?

In January 2025, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced the suspension of funding, which has led to significant difficulties for organizations that provide assistance to people with disabilities. This is especially true in Ukraine, where many people have been affected by the war and need rehabilitation, social protection, and access to necessary services.

Response of the EU and international donors

EDF and its partners are calling on the EU and other international organizations to urgently provide additional funding to ensure the continuity of vital programs. The joint statement emphasizes that such support is necessary in both the short and long term to ensure the sustainability of services for people with disabilities.

Impact on Ukraine

Ukrainian organizations of people with disabilities have already felt the effects of funding cuts. The loss of support could lead to the closure of many initiatives aimed at helping those affected by the war. The National Assembly of Persons with Disabilities of Ukraine (NAPDU) supports EDF's call and urges the Ukrainian government, the European Commission and international partners to take steps to ensure the necessary financial support.

Conclusion.

Funding for organizations of people with disabilities should remain a priority for the international community. The European Union has the opportunity not only to prevent a humanitarian crisis, but also to demonstrate its commitment to protecting human rights and ensuring an inclusive society for all. The NAIU will continue to work on these issues, engaging partners in finding sustainable solutions.
