Due to the full-scale war, thousands of people in Ukraine were forced to leave their homes. Many of them found temporary shelter in the Poltava region — a territory bordering several frontline regions and one of the first to receive people seeking safety from hostilities. One such community is Karlivska. Some internally displaced persons (IDPs) settled here as early as 2022 and remain to this day.
Adapting to a new life is always a challenging process. Within the project “Multisectoral Humanitarian Assistance for IDPs, Returnees, Veterans, and Their Host Communities in Ukraine,” which operates in the Karlivska community, several residents with disabilities received essential financial assistance, as well as special technical and assistive devices.
Serhii, who has a mobility impairment and cannot move independently, received an electric adjustable bed. This significantly improves his daily quality of life and care.
Anastasiia, who has a complex condition and studies at a specialized school, received a tablet to support her education. She is very active and open to communication, and the new device helps her expand her knowledge and skills in an accessible format.
Financial aid and essential assistive technologies were also provided to women with disabilities in the community who are recovering from serious illnesses and undergoing rehabilitation after surgeries.
Supporting internally displaced persons is one of the project’s key priorities. People who have lost their homes are among the most vulnerable groups: uprooted from their familiar environments and often cut off from their means of livelihood, they frequently face difficult conditions even after escaping conflict zones. Still, many continue to dream of returning home — when circumstances allow. That’s why the project works to provide them with the support they need to live with dignity and adapt to their new reality.
