Dmytro Vasylovych lost his hearing in childhood and became accustomed to living in silence. Throughout his life, doctors recommended a hearing aid, but the cost was too high for him to afford.
Despite the communication challenges, he worked as a tractor operator and driver, provided for his family, and, together with his wife, raised two daughters. However, due to his hearing loss, interacting with others was always difficult—he could not hear his own voice, was unsure how his speech sounded, and felt self-conscious about speaking.
When he learned about the opportunity to receive a hearing aid for free, he initially didn’t believe it was possible. Still, he applied for one.
At nearly 60 years old, Dmytro Vasylovych received his first hearing aid. A simple device made a significant difference in his life. Now, he can hear the voices of his children and wife, communicate more easily with colleagues and acquaintances, and no longer feels ashamed to speak. Hearing his own voice has given him confidence, and he has become more open to those around him.
“Just a year ago, I felt limited in ways that prevented me from living fully—communicating freely, overcoming my shyness, and hearing my children’s voices. Now, this is my reality. It is the greatest gift I could have received,” shares Dmytro Vasylovych.
Assistive technologies are more than just technical devices—they help people remain active, independent, and self-sufficient. Dmytro Vasylovych’s story is just one of many that demonstrate how inclusivity is about equal opportunities for everyone.
Other residents of the Storozhynets community have also received essential assistive technologies through the project “Multisectoral Humanitarian Assistance Considering Disability for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), Returnees, Veterans, and Host Communities in Ukraine.” The initiative is implemented by the National Assembly of People with Disabilities of Ukraine with the support of the German Federal Foreign Office (GFFO), CBM, and EDF.
Blood pressure monitors, inhalers, and hearing aids—not only do these devices make daily life easier, but they also improve its quality, allowing people to take better care of their health, stay active, and maintain their independence.
