The National Assembly of Persons with Disabilities of Ukraine is implementing the project «Multisectoral Humanitarian Assistance for IDPs, Returnees, Veterans and Host Communities in Ukraine« and is visiting pilot communities in Volyn, Poltava and Chernivtsi regions. Stories of people who live next to us.
The brother and sister live in a small but cozy house with several rooms. Both have disabilities. Despite the challenges of life, they always support each other, run the household together and make plans for the future.
Tetiana, 49, says that she does almost all her household chores on her own. She studied to be an accountant, knows how to drive a car and loves to draw. She uses a wheelchair to get around. To communicate freely with her brother, she learned sign language. She recalls that she had to become completely independent after her parents died. Her father died last year from coronavirus. The disease developed very quickly, and it was not possible to save him.
«My brother and I are very supportive of each other. I do the housework, and he takes care of the farm. We have a garden, we cultivate it and grow vegetables. A social worker also helps, especially with household chores and if we need to buy something in the store. In short, we live as best we can. I have an education, but I am not working now because not everyone wants to hire a person with a disability. But I think I would like to do something, at least online,» says Tetiana.
«I love my Torchyn, this is the place where I was born, the place of my parents. It is good for us to live here, but there is not enough public transportation, the roads are very bad in some places, and it is not always easy to get social assistance. I believe that everything will change for the better,» she adds.
Recently, the family's TV and washing machine broke down. They say that dreams do come true. Perhaps someone reading this post will want to give the family joy and will be able to buy new appliances.
