On the initiative of the Chernivtsi Regional Organization of People with Disabilities "Leader", representatives of local authorities, community members and activists conducted an audit of pedestrian crossings along the sidewalks of the main streets of Storozhynets. The purpose of the event was to assess how accessible the infrastructure is for people with limited mobility.
During the campaign, people with disabilities, mothers with children, passersby with suitcases, and visually impaired residents tried to walk the streets of Storozhynets without any obstacles. Of course, this route was not easy, and the quality of the pavement once again proved that people with limited mobility face enormous difficulties in getting around the city every day.
The meeting was attended by the mayor of Storozhynets, Ihor Mateychuk, and his first deputy, Ihor Bilenchuk. They also joined the walk to make sure that the problem was real and needed to be addressed immediately. The authorities promised to help and facilitate accessibility as soon as possible.
After the audit was completed, the experts began working on proposals to improve the accessibility of the sidewalk network. The findings and recommendations will be passed on to local authorities for further implementation.
This will be an important step towards creating a barrier-free environment in the Storozhynets community, where every resident will be able to move around the city comfortably and safely.
The advocacy campaign is part of the International Project "Disability-inclusive multisectoral humanitarian assistance for internally displaced persons (IDPs), returnees, veterans and host communities in Ukraine" implemented by the National Assembly of Persons with Disabilities of Ukraine with the financial support of the German Federal Foreign Office (GFFO), the European Disability Forum (EDF), and the Christian Blind Mission (CBM).
