May 8 — Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in World War II

May 8, 2025

Every year on May 8, the whole world commemorates the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in World War II. It is a day when we remember the tragedy of war, the millions of lives lost, broken destinies, the courage, resistance, and indomitability of the human spirit.

This date has a special significance for Ukraine. Ukrainians, regardless of nationality, became victims and heroes of that war. Most of them found themselves between two totalitarian regimes. Among them are people with disabilities, who were often overlooked by history, but were also an inseparable part of it: both soldiers who returned from the front wounded, and civilians who lost their health due to shelling, forced labor, or occupation repression.

Today, in the conditions of a new war unleashed by the Russian Federation against Ukraine, we are even more deeply aware of the price of peace, freedom, and human dignity. The Ukrainian people are fighting again — for their independence, for the right to live on their own land, for a democratic future. And again, people with disabilities are among those who defend the country, help in the rear, and provide support to others.

On the Day of Remembrance and Victory, we remember all those who died in the fight against Nazism. We honor the feat of everyone who brought victory closer. We express gratitude to veterans. And we speak about the need to build a Ukraine in which every person — regardless of age, gender, or health status — has the right to a decent life, accessibility, and equality.

We remember the past - we fight for a just future.
