The Uman community (Cherkasy region) investigated the problem of cognitive accessibility of local official websites for young people with intellectual disabilities. Information about the study, as well as the conclusions obtained, were presented at the round table “Accessible information as a condition for the implementation of the rights of persons with intellectual disabilities in the community”.

The event was organized and held by the public organization “The Path of Good” as part of the advocacy campaign “Humanitarian Response: Everyone has the right to protection”, which is part of the project “Strengthening the protection of the rights of persons with disabilities during humanitarian response and recovery in accordance with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities”.

According to the participants of the study, most of the texts are quite difficult for them to understand, since these articles are very large in volume and written in complex language. It is also difficult to find the necessary information due to the complexity of the wording.

Uman activists initiated the creation of a version of the websites written in plain language. They submitted their proposals to local authorities. As stated by the representative of the Uman City Council, the community is already working on improving accessibility, and the authorities have taken the recommendations they provided into consideration.
