The Korosten community (Zhytomyr region) plans to introduce partial reimbursement of the cost of medical services for Chernobyl accident liquidators from the city budget.
This was reported on the website of the Korosten City Council.
The initiative was discussed at a round table held as part of the advocacy campaign “Humanitarian Response: Everyone Has the Right to Protection,” which is being implemented as part of the project “Strengthening the Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities during Humanitarian Response and Recovery in accordance with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.” The idea was supported and submitted to the city authorities for consideration.
According to the authors of this initiative, it is very relevant for the community, as the health of many Chernobyl heroes remains poor. At the same time, most of the liquidators are people with disabilities and have a number of acquired diseases that require expensive treatment. They cannot pay for medical services on their own, as their pension levels are generally low and they do not receive any benefits.
The project “Strengthening the protection of the rights of persons with disabilities during humanitarian response and recovery in accordance with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities” is being implemented by the NAPD within the framework of a grant from the International Disability Alliance (IDA).
