When information is a matter of life

March 3, 2026

The Kyiv-based organization UTOH held a roundtable discussion on communication accessibility for people with hearing impairments.

The event was part of the advocacy campaign “Humanitarian Response: Everyone Has the Right to Protection.” The campaign is part of the project “Strengthening the protection of the rights of persons with disabilities during humanitarian response and recovery in accordance with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities,” which is being implemented by the National Assembly of Persons with Disabilities of Ukraine.

According to those present, the biggest problems for people with hearing impairments arise when emergency services address the population and when people seek humanitarian aid.

"People with hearing impairments receive virtually no information adapted to their needs during wartime. There are very few sign language translations available today, and this is a significant problem for them, said Tetyana Kornienko, acting head of the Kyiv organization of the Ukrainian Society of the Deaf.
