February 28, 2024

The Kirovohrad Regional Public Organization of Mothers of Children with Disabilities and Persons with Disabilities "Mother's Heart" (the organization is a member of the NAPD) has been taking care of families with children with disabilities for 13 years. The purpose of the organization's activities is to meet and protect the social, economic, age and other interests of persons with disabilities as the most vulnerable category of the population. A special place in the activities of the NGO is occupied by the provision of social services: social rehabilitation of persons with intellectual and mental disabilities; physical support for persons with disabilities (including those with intellectual, sensory, motor, mental and behavioral disabilities); support during inclusive education; personal assistant. The organization has created the Strong in Spirit Center for Youth with Disabilities, where various classes for children and youth with disabilities are held on a regular basis. There are art, theater, culinary studios, a computer literacy studio, a creative workshop, and classes with a practical psychologist.

The implemented projects include an inclusive day camp for children and youth with disabilities called "Hold the Wave!" As part of the project, the NGO Mother's Heart opened the I-Hab (InclusionHab). Here's what the head of the organization, Liudmyla Shukruta, has to say about the project and the problems it aims to solve:

"The birth of a child is usually an influential event in a family's life, and if the child has disabilities, he or she needs increased attention, various rehabilitation resources, and special upbringing. Children in this category develop a psychology of dependence on another person, which impedes their integration into society and deprives them of the ability to defend their legal rights. Social and psychological disability resulting from disability. Difficulties in socialization are the most important problem for children with special needs. Difficulties in socializing a child are combined with the inadequacy of the child's perception of the social requirements and the unwillingness of the subjects of interaction to partner with them..."

All of these problems are exacerbated by the fact that many families with children and youth with disabilities were forced to flee their homes as a result of the war and, as a result, have lost their previous income and well-being and are forced to adapt to new living conditions. The goal of the I-Hab project is to create a safe space for educational and creative development, emotional and psychological relief, and inclusive communication for children and youth with disabilities, including IDPs, to overcome stress, traumatic experiences, and despair caused by the war. The project will provide social and labor rehabilitation and psychological support services to 20 children and youth (aged 10-35) with disabilities, including IDPs, through various activities at the Center for Youth with Disabilities "Strong in Spirit" throughout the project implementation period.

Classes on non-formal education, art therapy, master classes, entertainment and creative activities are already underway to help integrate people into new communities and support their mental health, and strengthen the capacity of children with disabilities. For example, a training session was recently held aimed at forming and developing self-knowledge, self-development, creating a positive psychological climate, developing skills of self-analysis and self-control, positive attitude towards oneself and others, self-awareness, self-esteem, and unlocking personal potential. Another event that took place as part of the project was a workshop for young people with disabilities on making soft felt toys. This art form has a positive impact on the intellectual, emotional, and physical development of young people, and felt toys are safe for children.

All these problems are deepened against the background of the fact that many families with children and youth with disabilities were forced to leave their homes as a result of the war and, as a result, lost their former income and well-being, forced to adapt to new living conditions.
