Financial Support in Difficult Times: When It’s Important Not to Stop Treatment

23 September 2026

During a full-scale war, the financial burden on Ukrainian families has increased significantly. Rising prices for goods and services, unstable incomes, and additional daily expenses are forcing many people to reevaluate their budgets and put off things they thought they couldn’t do without. This situation is particularly difficult for people with ongoing medical expenses.

Marina lives in Brovary. In 2005, she suffered an injury whose consequences significantly changed her life. For a long time, Marina lived in Pivdennoukrainsk, Mykolaiv Oblast, and in 2020 she moved to Kyiv Oblast.

Due to the effects of her injury, Marina is unable to work. Her main source of income is her pension, which she uses to pay for food, utilities, and other daily necessities. Medications remain a separate, ongoing expense.

In the context of war, when the cost of living is rising and opportunities to increase one’s income are limited, even the regular purchase of necessary medications can become a significant financial burden. This is precisely the situation Marina faced.

As part of the “Women’s Health” project, Marina received targeted cash assistance, which she used to purchase medications. For her, this meant she didn’t have to postpone health-related expenses due to a lack of funds.

Marina’s story shows just how important targeted support remains during wartime. After all, the ability to decide for oneself how to allocate the funds received helps address the need that is most urgent at any given moment.

For Marina, that need was medication. For someone else, it might be transportation costs, mobility aids, clothing, household necessities, or other essentials. It is precisely this ability to set one’s own priorities that is a vital component of independence and respect for a person’s decisions.
