Handout 4.1. Case Study “Serhii”

How can vocational education and training be organised for a veteran with a disability so that necessary support does not mean lowering occupational requirements?

The “Serhii” case-study handout supplements Topic 4.1 of Module 4 and is designed for practical application of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF).

This material is based on the situation of a 32-year-old veteran who uses a prosthesis following an injury and lower-limb amputation and wants to return to professional life. Serhii has previous experience working in a technical field and enters a VET provider to train for a technical occupation.

The case invites participants to analyse how a person’s functioning interacts with occupational requirements and the educational environment. Participants consider physical demands, the organisation of the workplace and breaks, equipment accessibility, communication with educators, psychological and social factors, and the coordination of necessary support.

At the same time, attention is paid not only to barriers but also to the person’s resources – professional experience, motivation, discipline, teamwork skills, adaptability, and family support.

Practical questions help determine what changes in the organisation of learning can ensure the learner’s full participation without lowering the requirements of vocational training.

The material will be useful for trainers and teaching staff to practise ICF-oriented analysis and identify practical solutions for organising inclusive vocational education and training.
