Module 6. Presentation 6.1. Pedagogical Support for Learners with Special Educational Needs: Ethical Principles and Professional Dilemmas

The presentation focuses on the ethical aspects of pedagogical support for learners with special educational needs. The material is based on the understanding of inclusion not only as physical or information accessibility, but as a combination of access, full participation, and respect for human dignity.

This material examines four key principles of professional interaction: confidentiality, respect for dignity, non-discrimination and equal access, and professional boundaries and responsibility. Participants are encouraged to analyse their own decisions using simple check questions: Is confidentiality being breached? Is the person’s dignity preserved? Is equal access ensured? Is the educator acting within the boundaries of their professional role?

The practical component is built around 12 situations from educators’ professional lives. These include disclosing information without a learner’s consent, stigmatisation disguised as “care”, discriminatory remarks, conflict between standards and adaptations, responding to a veteran’s triggers, bullying, pressure to disclose medical information, inappropriate assistance during assessment, public humiliation, taking photos or videos without consent, and discriminatory treatment by an employer during a work placement. For each situation, action algorithms and examples of appropriate communication are provided.

The material helps translate the principles of inclusion into day-to-day pedagogical practice and create a professional environment in which support does not turn into overprotection, adaptation does not mean lowering standards, and a person’s individual needs do not become grounds for stigma or discrimination.

The presentation can be used during training sessions, in-house professional learning, and discussion of professional situations within VET provider teams as part of Module 6 of the Trainer’s Guide.
