Module 4. Handout 4.1. Case Study “Iryna”

The “Iryna” case invites participants to consider a learner’s transition from inclusive schooling to vocational education and training. Iryna experiences difficulties with reading, writing, and certain mathematical operations, but learns effectively through practical activities, demonstrations, visual supports, and step-by-step algorithms.
Using training for the occupation of “Pastry Cook” as an example, the material helps analyse how the organisation of the educational process, ways of presenting information, the use of prior recommendations from an Inclusive Resource Centre (IRC), and cooperation across different levels of education can affect the learner’s participation in learning.
The case study is based on an ICF-oriented approach and invites participants to consider not only individual difficulties, but also the interaction between the person’s functioning and the educational environment. Practical questions help identify barriers and resources, Iryna’s strengths, and potential changes in VET provider practices that would support her full participation in learning.
The case can be used for training and group work as part of Module 4 of the Trainer’s Guide.
The project “Inclusive Vocational Education and Training: Improving Training for Veterans and People with Disabilities” is implemented by the National Assembly of People with Disabilities of Ukraine (NAPD) in cooperation with Christoffel-Blindenmission Christian Blind Mission e.V. (CBM) with financial support from the European Union, Germany, Poland, Estonia, and Denmark, as part of the Skills4Recovery Multi-Donor Initiative, implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and Solidarity Fund PL (SFPL).
