When daily life involves constant travel and covering significant distances, the ability to remain mobile directly affects how much a person can plan their own life.
For two residents of the Chutiv community, this issue is particularly practical. Both women live in private homes, manage their households, tend their gardens, and share a common hobby—growing flowers. Each has her own daily routine, tasks, and routes she must navigate every day.
The women have musculoskeletal conditions, so traveling longer distances can require significant physical effort. Recently, as part of the “Women’s Health” project, they were provided with bicycles that will help them get around the community more easily and take care of their daily tasks.
For a person, mobility is not just the ability to get from one place to another. It is the ability to choose for oneself when to go shopping, run necessary errands, meet with others, tend to household chores, or simply spend the day exactly as one wishes.
That is why, when providing support, it is important to consider not only the presence of a disability but also the specific circumstances of a person’s life: where they live, which routes they use, what they do, and what will help them be more independent in their daily lives.
For two residents of the Chutiv community, bicycles were the solution. They make it easier to cover distances and reduce their dependence on help from others.
The right to independent living entails the ability to make one’s own decisions, access necessary services, maintain social connections, and participate in community life on an equal footing with others. Mobility is one of the key conditions for realizing this right.
This assistance was provided as part of the “Women’s Health” project, which is being implemented by the National Assembly of People with Disabilities of Ukraine with the support of and in partnership with the Norwegian Federation for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Atlas Alliance.
