Empowering Support: The Story of Mr. Mykola from the Opishnia Community

May 23, 2025

The project “Multi-sectoral Humanitarian Assistance with a Disability-Inclusive Approach for IDPs, Returnees, Veterans, and Host Communities in Ukraine” continues its mission, delivering tailored support to people in need across local communities. Assistance is provided to those who genuinely require it — promptly, respectfully, and with attention to individual circumstances.

Mr. Mykola is a cheerful, active man well-known in the Opishnia community. For many years, he managed a household, drove his own car, supported his family, and helped his grandchildren build their homes. His energy and optimism were truly inspiring.

However, a sudden decline in his health deeply affected his usual way of life. Temporarily losing the ability to move independently, Mr. Mykola required support for recovery and rehabilitation. One key element in this process was a functional bed — essential for reducing physical strain, ensuring comfort during care, and preserving a person’s dignity.

Thanks to the project, Mr. Mykola received exactly this kind of bed — a significant step toward regaining independence and improving the quality of life not only for himself but also for his wife, who stands by his side each day, offering unwavering support.

“This was timely and much-needed assistance. Without it, recovery would have been far more difficult,” shared the family., - the family shared.

We firmly believe that support provided with respect and at the right moment can truly change lives. Mr. Mykola’s story is yet another example of how disability-inclusive humanitarian aid strengthens dignity, autonomy, and self-belief.

The Opishnia community has access to this kind of support thanks to the joint efforts of the project partners: the National Assembly of People with Disabilities of Ukraine, the European Disability Forum (EDF), the German Federal Foreign Office (GFFO), and CBM (Christoffel-Blindenmission) — all contributing to the implementation of this large-scale humanitarian initiative.
