Library accessible to all: consultations in communities continue

May 28, 2021

On May 25, the National Assembly of People with Disabilities of Ukraine held a кconsulting. online meeting «Library - accessible to all» as part of the project «Rights of Women with Disabilities in the Context of Decentralization». More than 30 participants attended the meeting, including 19 employees of library institutions in the pilot regions.

Project manager Larysa Baida introduced Petro Polishchuk, who moderated the event. Petro Polishchuk is a trainer-consultant at the Okular Internet Center of the Rivne Regional Universal Scientific Library. He is also the head of the Separate Subdivision of the All-Ukrainian Public Organization of People with Visual Impairments «Generation of Successful Action» in Rivne Oblast, a member of the accessibility committees for MHM at the Rivne Regional State Administration and the Rivne City Council, and an advisor to the Rivne Mayor.

Petro familiarized the participants of the meeting with the main approaches and requirements for ensuring accessibility for people with limited mobility.

One of the presentations was devoted to the experience of serving people with disabilities in the Rivne Regional Universal Scientific Library.

Petro also introduced the work of the regional library, approaches to providing services to people with disabilities by the Internet center «Okular»: training people with visual impairments in the latest information and computer technologies, creating an adaptive resource, examples of creating tactile graphics, holding master classes and interactive events, creating and posting interactive audio guides on the site, etc.

After the event, all participants were sent presentation and information materials by e-mail.

Given the great interest in this topic in the communities, the activity of the participants, and the fact that libraries have been identified as one of the objects of gender audit in the communities, we consider it appropriate to continue consulting communities in this area.
