Handout 4.1. Case Study “Nazar”

How can we understand what support a learner needs when transitioning to vocational education and training without lowering occupational requirements?

The “Nazar” case-study handout supplements Topic 4.1 of Module 4 and is designed for practical application of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF).

This material is based on the story of 16-year-old Nazar, who enters a VET provider after studying at a special education institution. The change of environment means a larger group, a different pace of learning, a higher level of independence, and new occupational requirements.

The case encourages participants to view the situation not through a diagnosis, but through the person’s functioning and interaction with the educational environment. Participants analyse the learner’s barriers, strengths and resources, occupational requirements, the organisation of the learning process, as well as continuity of support and cooperation among different institutions.

Practical questions help identify where barriers arise and what priority changes the VET provider can introduce to support the learner without lowering occupational requirements.

The material will be useful for trainers and teaching staff to practise ICF-oriented analysis of specific educational situations and identify practical solutions.
