Handout 4.1. Case Study “Andrii”

How can vocational education and training be organised for a veteran who is returning to civilian life while also requiring treatment, rehabilitation, and adaptations to the educational process?

The “Andrii” case-study handout supplements Topic 4.1 of Module 4 and helps participants apply the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) in practice to real-life situations that veterans may encounter in vocational education and training.

The case is based on the story of a 29-year-old veteran who, following demobilisation, enrolled at a VET provider to acquire a new civilian occupation. He combines his studies with treatment and rehabilitation, while certain aspects of his functioning affect his concentration, stamina, information processing, and ability to follow a standard learning timetable.

The case encourages participants to analyse the situation comprehensively – taking into account not only the individual’s personal needs, but also the organisation of learning, physical and learning environments, schedule flexibility, and interagency cooperation between the VET provider and medical or social services.

At the same time, participants learn to identify the learner’s strengths and resources, such as responsibility, discipline, practical life experience, teamwork skills, and motivation to re-enter active civilian life.

Practical reflection questions help identify key barriers and select priority actions to enhance the veteran’s active participation in vocational education and training.

The material will be a valuable resource for trainers, teaching staff, and VET institution leaders seeking to apply an ICF-oriented approach and strengthen interagency cooperation when supporting veterans in VET settings.
