As part of the preparatory process for the the High-level Plenary Meeting of the UN General Assembly on Disability and Development, will hold online consultations from March 8 to 28, 2013.

In many countries, the progress made towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) has not been successful in engaging vulnerable groups, including people with disabilities. It is essential that greater attention be paid to issues of inequality, discrimination and social injustice in the process of accelerating and scaling up progress towards the MDGs and in defining the new post-2015 development agenda.

On September 23, 2013, the UN General Assembly will hold a High-level Plenary Meeting on Disability and Development entitled “The Way Forward: The Development and Disability Agenda before and after 2015” at the UN Headquarters in New York.

In order to mainstream disability in the post-2015 development agenda, the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs and UNICEF, in collaboration with the UN Partnership for the Advancement of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, will conduct an online consultation to gather views from a wide range of stakeholders on how to mainstream disability in the post-2015 development agenda and to inform the High-level Plenary Meeting.

Building on the online discussion on “Disability and Inequality in the Post-2015 Development Agenda” held on this website in November (a summary report can be found here), the purpose of this online consultation is to explore the challenges faced in different regions and to identify specific measures and actions to be taken by different stakeholders to promote an inclusive society for people with disabilities.

To participate in the online consultation, please register hereor here. The consultations will be held in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. The site is screen reader compatible, however, if you are unable to access the site, please send your message to these email addresses: inequalities@worldwewant2015.org и hrofficer.dpi@gmail.com. The online forum will be managed by a moderator, so your message may not appear immediately on the forum, but it will be posted within twenty-four hours.

All recommendations will be included in the report of the consultation to inform the outcome document of the UN Plenary Meeting on Disability and Development to be held in New York on September 23, 2013.

The Consultation will provide an opportunity for all participants from academia, media, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), civil society, private sector, government and the UN system to discuss various thematic issues and provide their recommendations on the topic.

Please invite your colleagues, partners and friends to participate in this forum.

The consultations started on Friday, March 8, 2013!

Sincerely yours,

The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs and UNICEF, in cooperation with the United Nations Partnership to Promote the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
