The National Assembly of People with Disabilities of Ukraine (NAPD) continues to implement the project  “Enhancing the Leadership of Women with Disabilities in Gender-Oriented Humanitarian Responses”, funded by the United Nations Women’s Fund for Peace and Humanitarian Aid (WPHF).

It facilitates access to information and provides legal and psychological support to women and girls with disabilities who have suffered from the war, especially those with special needs. In particular, it is implemented through the NAPD’s network of public organizations and thanks to the female leaders (the project mobilizers) in the regions.

Within the project implementation, the National Assembly of People with Disabilities has provided financial support to 7 public organizations of people with disabilities from six regions of Ukraine so that they could arrange crisis services to deliver accommodation, meals, psychological help, food packages, and other services through centers of temporary stay for women, girls, and men with disabilities; women raising children with disabilities; elderly women including internally displaced persons from other Ukrainian regions with hostilities.

The public organization “The Center for Social Adaptation of People with Disabilities – Ocean of Kindness” in Dnipro city has become one of the project partners. This NGO does not stop at what has been achieved and continues creating the necessary conditions for delivery of crisis services through the Center of temporary stay for people with disabilities and elderly people, most of whom are women.

Olha Volkova, “The Center for Social Adaptation of People with Disabilities – The Ocean of Kindness” public organization:

“Bravery has various faces! Sometimes courage is just to live one’s own life. Sometimes it is to sit between two walls and cook a borsch dish during breaks. And sometimes it means departing from dangerous places for thousands of kilometers away without prior planning.  Our Center “The Ocean of Kindness” has been living every day as the hardest days since the start of this terrible war! We are grateful for the support and aid to our project partners – the National Assembly of People with Disabilities of Ukraine and the UN Women’s Fund for Peace and Humanitarian Aid – in the arranging of meals services,” says Olha Volkova, the organization leader.

Viktoria Nazarenko, NAPD’s Secretary General, cannot hide her enthusiasm towards the Center’s activities:

“Well done and keep it up! We are proud of you personally and of your team undertaking such incredible amounts of work! The National Assembly will always be supporting you wherever possible! Good for you! You are holding the social front and delivering aid to those who really need it!”

The implementation of the project “Enhancing the Leadership of Women with Disabilities in Gender-Oriented Humanitarian Responses” has also contributed to making it real. This project helps:

  • women’s organization and local networks of women with disabilities to strengthen their capacity for taking part in the humanitarian responses in Ukraine so as to meet the most urgent needs of women at the regional and local levels;
  • partially provision the activities of organizations of people with disabilities and female leaders in the context of social and economic renovation of the country and the leadership role of women in peacebuilding;
  • strengthen the institutional capacity of organizations created by people with disabilities – the organizations actively supporting women with disabilities, women raising children with disabilities, elderly women and their family members, including internally displaced persons.

The United Nations Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund (WPHF) is a unified global financial mechanism designed exclusively to support the participation of women in peacebuilding and humanitarian responses. WPHF is a flexible and rapid financing tool supporting quality interventions to enhance the capacity of local women to prevent conflict, respond to crises and emergencies, and seize key peacebuilding opportunities. WPHF is an innovative partnership among its member states, the UN, and the civil society, with all the stakeholders represented in its global Financial Council.
